Gay's fight with Cancer
Dear Friends of the Strojny Family,
Those of you are unfortunate enough to be on our Christmas letter list know that I try to get out a yearly update on the Strojny Family around Christmas or Easter (if I procrastinate). I also try to be somewhat humorous and not too verbose. We now have "breaking news" as they say on TV and we decided that this would be the best venue to keep you advised.
For those of you who don't know, Gay (aka Gabby to the grand kids) is a two time breast cancer survivor. She was first diagnosed in her forties, had a lumpectomy and radiation (we used her as a night light) and SHE BEAT IT! Within a year this stuff came back and she went through a mastectomy and chemo. I lost more hair than she did during this bout but again, SHE BEAT IT! She has been clean for twenty-one years and is in wonderful health. Then we got the news this week that the cancer has returned. As her doctor says, "you can treat the cancer, you just can't cure it".
I won't attempt to sugar coat this. Gay's cancer is stage four (there is no stage five) and has metastasized into her skull, upper spine and scapular. Luckily these are very slight lesions and don't affect any major organs including the brain. We have a marvelous oncologist and daughter Heidi who works for Cisco health care has set up teleconferencing with the brightest and the best. We have a plan to fight this and, as of now, it will be done locally.
Right now Gay is on hormone therapy and will begin aggressive chemotherapy in two weeks. We've all read how tough that will be but I can attest to the fight in this lady. The kids are already picking out cool hats (Gay will not wear a wig) and she hopes to continue her beloved golfing and volunteering. She will be taking the chemo once a week for twelve weeks and then reevaluated. We hope to put the cancer to sleep and then knock the hell out of it. As an example of her "toughness" she had to have two upper teeth pulled prior to the chemo. Note the swollen jaw in the "Fightin' Gabby" picture. This was taken two days after the extractions! I'd still be in bed with my pain pills and some whiskey!
That's the news up to date. We have friends lighting candles at the Notre Dame Grotto (pretty powerful stuff here) and we'd really appreciate your thoughts and prayers. I'm just looking forward to to day when I can report again, SHE BEAT IT!!!
Please feel free to comment to the postings. It's really easy to do. I just found out that I had checked "only members of this blog can post comments" (DUH)!! I've now checked "Anyone can post" so hopefully you'll now be able to comment without too much trouble. If in doubt, please read the "Adding Comments 101" post. I'll be back here with more info and status as we get it. You can bookmark this blog to get back to it periodically. Stay tuned!

Hey, guys, thanks for the update. Sorry it wasn't better news but can't think of a stronger fighter than Gay. Love the photos on the blog. Sending lots of love and hugs and good, good thoughts. B and P
We are so sorry to read about the return of your cancer. Our families have faced this terrible disease now since the early 60's and it is just amazing how far medical technology has come to help patients survive today! Wishing you all of the best! Hang in there and make each day special! Keeping you in our daily prayers.
Love,
Jim & Louise Pryor
Gay and Denny,
You've got the fighting Irish in you to beat this cancer again. If you need support on those treatment days, I can always accompany you. If you need help on a daily basis, grocery shopping or whatever, I can be there. Someone to do the mundane erands, just call on me. Let us all help you. You are more than a friend Gay. Love DeeDee
Gay - you are my inspiration! Denny the blog is great - hey with that beautiful face who needs hair - though a tina turner wig might be interesting - you are always in our prayers and thoughts - and I know how tuff you are -- I worked with you! kick some more butt!
Love to all,
Jane and Al
Dear Gay,
We are so sorry to hear you must fight this battle again. Didn't anyone tell the "C" monster it's no match for you. In this round "Fightin Gabby" will deliver the knockout punch. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you, Denny and family. The blog was a terrific idea and you did a fantastic job. Great Photos!
Love, Jimily
Hi Gay,
I am glad Denny is using his nervous energy in writing this blog. It is a great way to keep friends and family updated and not crush your e-mail in-box. I, too have been writing a sort of diary of events concerning Kris's lymphoma, but not on a blog, just for my own serenity. I am up to 9,000 words.
You know, I know what "we" went through last time to fight this disease. I know you will do it again; I wish I were closer to help you again. I will be there in spirit and my prayers will be with you every day.
With love,
Car
Gay, Monettes will always have your spot open so hang tough. We want you there "Miss Original Monette". Will be praying for you and we all know prayers DO work.
Cindy
Dear Gay, I knew from that first day I met you at the Newcomer's Bridge that we had a lot in common. Little did I realize how much through these last 7 years. Needless to say, I was shocked to read this news on your latest challenge. I can relate in a big way since I also am a two times survivor of breast cancer, mastectomy and lumpectomy. We never knew about each other. Remember the goodness of God and keep your trust in him. I'll be praying for you daily and know that you'll beat this thing again. Take care. Your friend, Sally
Gay and Denny too
What a great idea to do the blog-it was wonderful. Please add us to your e-mail list and we will be checking the blog site as well. I think I said enough in my e-mail to you, but please know that Dick and I will help in any we can, doing whatever needs to be done anytime. You are in our prayers and have been added to a prayer chain through our daughter in Atlanta. Dick completely understands what you are going through as a family, as he did this with his 1st wife. If Denny needs to talk to someone, Dick is there and is a good listener. Gay, you are a terrific person and if anyone can beat this, you will. Our thoughts and love are with you. Suzanne and Dick
Gay, So sorry to get the news, but know you will fight it and that your friends are here when you need us. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Mary Ann

TEST COMMENT ( Others did not list)
I don't think we've met but my mom (Mary Lou) and "Miss Candy" (as we all still call her), are great friends since their childhood days. She keeps us posted on the whole family. So you have one more person (up in Columbia, MD) praying for you.

Hi Gay, Wow...Car wrote and let me know your news. I have another friend up here who does something very similar to this blog and it is a great help. I am so confident in your ability to whip this thing, but in the meantime if you need it....take my strength and rely on my faith. I am with you 110%.
Dear Gay & Dennis - am a friend of Mario and Josephine (Raleigh) and wanted to tell you that you are in our prayers and we love the "Fight Like a Girl" shirt......need to market those up north here.

Gay,
You are the poster woman for the plaintive cry. Why do bad things happen to good people?
Everyone is jealous of your abilities to juggle so many balls. At home you have your mother and the little kid (who used to fly planes). You have beloved children and grandchildren. The number of your friends in Pinewild and throughout the country is staggering. And the number of activities and causes that attract your time and effort is impressive and well-known.
We have always been impressed with your energy and joy of living.
We shall long remember the day we and many seniors sat in lawn chairs for an interminable wait outside the county medical department for flu shots. With everyone morose about the delay, one bright star saught to energize the lethargic crowd into rising from their chairs in sequence to do "the wave".You succeeded in breathing life into that truly mundane gathering
Certainly we wish you well with your latest battle. We have a little experience with the advances and successes of the modern medical juggernaut. Now that those miracle beams and potions are pointed in your direction, everyone will be cheering for you.
Jim and Pam
Hi Gay and Denny, received word from Cynthia about your newest challenge. Knowing you Gay I'm confident you will beat this one. Know that we are praying for you each day. This blog is a wondeerful way to keep up-to-date on your progress. Thank God for your wonderful family and friends who support you.
Love Jacqy
Hi again.
My nephew had cancer 1 1/2 years ago (has been cancer free since last May) and he had a website similar to this that was wonderful for him and his wife to get the support they needed from friends and people they didn't even know. It helps us know what is going on with you. He had his port in for a year I believe. Until they didn't need to draw blood every 3 weeks or so.
anyway, we think of you and talk about you (nothing bad, of course) often. I wish we lived closer so we could help out.
Your mom is 90. Please tell her Herm and Linda send their best wishes for her health.
Glad your grandchildren live somewhat close so they can see you.
Stay strong and know our prayers are with you and hopefully they will get heard!!!
Fondly,
Herm and Linda Stavis
Another test comment...
DEAR Gay
Just want you to know you are on my prayer list. Attitude is everything
ALL my best Jo Walker(CLEVELAND Ohio)
Gay, you are constantly in Cookie's and my thoughts AND constantly in our prayers.
Paul
Attitude
There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror,
and noticed she had only three hairs on her head.
"Well," she said, "I think I'll braid my hair today."
So she did and she had a wonderful day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror
and saw that she had only two hairs on her head.
"H-M-M," she said, "I think I'll part my hair down the middle today."
So she did and she had a grand day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed
that she had only one hair on her head.
"Well," she said, "today I'm going to wear my hair in a pony tail."
So she did, and she had a fun, fun day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed
that there wasn't a single hair on her head.
"YAY!" she exclaimed. "I don't have to fix my hair today!"
Attitude is everything!
Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
Live simply.
Love generously.
Care deeply.
Speak kindly.
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass,
It's about learning to dance in the rain.
I loved this!
I spoke with Heidi yesterday and told her I was trying to think of something really eloquent to write to her mom. This morning I came across this e-mail and it reminded me of her.
Gay and Denny: Jack, Maddie and I are all praying for you.
Dear Gay,
Just want to touch base and say hi. Loved the picture of you and your grandchildren. Can't believe how big they are. Your family reunion reminded me of our golf trips to Pawley's Island. I play a lot better now, but certainly not as good as you do!!!
Glad things seem to be going well and our prayers are with you!!
Herm and Linda
